A violin by Laberte-Humbert | Chipot-Vuillaume

A violin by Laberte-Humbert | Chipot-Vuillaume

Early 20th century | France

A perfect condition French violin! Made at the beginning of 20 century. It was taken care of extremely well, rarely we can see such a mint condition! Confirmed by luthier who praised the high quality workmanship.

Chipot-Vuillaume family was a family of Mirecourt luthiers, who worked with various famous French luthiers, incl. Derazey, Ch. JB Collin-Mezin or A. Deblaye. The workmanship and choice of wood for his instruments were of very good quality. The family’s brand was acquired by Laberte atelier and sold via the Laberte Humbert dealership.

The interesting story is that Chipot-Vuillaume used “Gendre de J.B. Vuillaume” in his labels, which means son-in-law of J.B. Vuillaume. J.B. Vuillaume was the most famous and expensive, globally recognized superstar violin maker. However, Chipot married a Vuillaume girl called Stella, and she was not a daughter of the famous Vuillaume. Nevertheless, the confusion was widespread and even some of the violinists experts of the past write in their guidbooks that Chipo-Vuillaume was related to the famous J.B. Vuillaume.

This violin is made of very good quality wood, very attractive varnish that emphasizes the attractive wood patterns and flames.

Top plate made of fine grained spruce, back plate made of two-piece beautifully flamed maple. Chinrest, tailpiece, pegs are made of rosewood – typical French style. Fingerboard made of ebony. Beautiful red-brown luminous varnish.  Real genuine flames. Beautifully inlaid purfling. Real natural gut tailgut.

Inside there is a label that says:

“CHIPOT-VUILLAUME  /  Gendre de J.B. VUILLAUME  / A PARIS“

This violin has been reviewed/checked by a  chairman of Polish Violin Makers Association Mr. Pielaszek. He is father or recent international star of violin making – Piotr Pielaszek, who has won many awards and whose violins reach 30+ thousand EUR. He put his properly adjusted bridge on this violin – signed Marek Pielaszek.

The violin is equipped with new high quality strings: Larsen Il Cannone Solo. These strings are one of the top choice of professional violinists (e.g. our violinist who is a concertmaster at the orchestra uses these strings). The strings have multifilament-fibre nylon core with pure silver winding (D and G) and aluminum winding (A).  These strings help produce strong yet colourful sound, enriching with overtones and enhancing selectivity of the violin and bow.  These strings are used by e.g. Renaud Capuçon and Rusanda Panfili.

Excellent noble sound, open and powerful, and with very rich with deep G and D strings. This violin offers a whole scope of sounds – from delicate sweet to bright open with great projection. As it has a very good projection, it sounds well on the stage and in concert hall. It’s very versatile and full of colors. Sound is excellent in both piano and forte, the player has the feeling of having the power reserve. In the same time it’s easy to play. Equal sound on all strings and all registers, well balanced. Rich in overtones.
